TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. It may sound complicated, but it really isn’t. Basically, TMJ means that your bite is improperly aligned. You could have been born with a bite like that, or it could be the result of a specific incident.
The main problem with TMJ is that it’s hard to properly diagnose.
Common symptoms of TMJ include:
- Headaches
- Sore face and jaw muscles
- Jaw clicking
- Blurred vision
- Neck pain
- Migraines
- Shoulder Pain
- Grinding teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Limited opening or Locked Jaw
The problem, from a diagnostic standpoint, is that these symptoms can occur in wildly varying degrees of severity. They may also appear and disappear seemingly at random. Because TMJ differs between each person, you will probably only have some, or even one, of the symptoms.
Treating and diagnosing TMJ can be difficult. Fortunately, Dr. Margio and Dr. Bryson both specialize in neuromuscular dentistry. They’re both graduates of the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), which is the nation’s premiere school for cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Bryson even teaches temporomandibular jaw science to other dentists at LVI.
To diagnose TMJ, Dr. Margio and Dr. Bryson:
- Take painless, unobtrusive measurements of your jaw and skull bones
- Take X-Rays of your jaw structure
- Use computer modeling to examine your bite patterns. This scientific computer equipment is not found in most dental offices. Drs. Bryson & Margio are one of the few offices in Nevada to have this precise equipment.
Often, the treatment for TMJ involves full mouth rejuvenation. This means either:
- Custom-made mouth guards
- Crowns and other restorations placed on the teeth to correct the bite
- Conventional Braces
- Invisible Braces
- Oral surgery (Note: This is only in very rare, extreme cases.)
