Snoring Treatment

Serving Las Vegas, Summerlin, and Henderson, Nevada

Everyone snores, right? It’s so commonplace that cartoons, sitcoms, and romantic comedies build entire story arcs around it. But despite its reputation as a commonplace annoyance, snoring may actually point to a larger issue like sleep apnea. Fortunately, TMJ dentistry can often provide relief when other approaches fall short. At Drs. Bryson and Margio Dentistry, we are pleased to offer our Las Vegas patients a full range of TMJ dentistry treatments. To learn more, please call 702-445-7075 to schedule an appointment.

Why is snoring such a big deal?

Snoring might seem fairly innocuous. After all, nearly everyone snores at one point or another. But when snoring interferes with your sleep, or with that of your sleep partner, it may be symptomatic of a much more serious condition called sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a dangerous medical condition in which the soft tissues of the airway collapse during sleep, causing the sufferer to temporarily stop breathing. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and prompts the individual to temporarily wake up, even if only subconsciously, and gasp for breath. This repeated cycle of sleeping and waking results in poor rest quality and can lead to much more serious conditions like hypertension, heart disease, and depression.

What causes chronic snoring?

Snoring occurs when soft airway tissues become partially obstructed during sleep. That characteristic raspy sound is the flutter of the airway tissues as air passes between them. The term “sawing wood” is actually fairly accurate in terms of the acoustical phenomena that cause that signature sound.

So what causes this dangerous airway restriction? Several physical culprits may be to blame:

While little can be done about genetics, alcohol consumption and obesity are readily, if not necessarily easily, addressed. And an experienced TMJ dentist can offer relief when jaw misalignment is to blame.

How is chronic snoring treated?

While over-the-counter nasal strips promise relief from snoring, such treatments fail to deliver in the long run. A qualified neuromuscular dentist who is experienced in disorders related to bite alignment can, however, offer effective solutions to TMJ and the chronic snoring that can be associated with it. From custom mouth guards that you wear at night to braces and, in extreme cases, oral surgery, dentist who is highly trained in TMJ-related conditions can offer relief from chronic snoring.

If you or your bed partner have had it with chronic snoring, it’s time to learn how modern TMJ dentistry can change your life. Please contact Drs. Bryson and Margio Dentistry today at 702-445-7075 to make an appointment with our Las Vegas TMJ dentistry professionals.
