One of the things that we commonly hear in our dental practice is how much patients dislike getting Novocaine. The main reason is the pain that comes from the traditional dental syringe and needle. In fact, many patients will actually have their dentistry done without even getting numb because they fear the needle so much. They would rather put up with discomfort from the drilling of their teeth than face having a painful dental injection.

There have been so many advances in dentistry throughout the years, and one of them is the Single Tooth Anesthesia System (STA) from Milestone Scientific. This system not only allows us to give a virtually pain-free dental injection, but also we do not need to numb half of the side of your face while doing so. The STA System has many advantages over the traditional way dentists typically anesthetize their patients. Here are some of them:

1-STA is a computer controlled system and is able to sense pressure/resistance while dispensing the Novocaine. The speed of fluid being dispensed is also controlled by the STA System. This is typically the main reason you'll experience pain during an dental injection.

2-The STA System needle is much smaller than traditional syringe and needle because the fluid is dispensed by a computer, causing virtually no pain while delivering the Novocaine.

3-The STA allows us to numb just one tooth, so much less Novocaine is required which is much safer for our patients. Also, by numbing only one tooth you don't leave the office with the entire one side of your face still numb and puffy for hours.

We have been using the STA System for years and have found our patients LOVE IT. We constantly hear "That was the best shot I ever had". We use the STA System ALL the time with all dental procedures requiring Novocaine. We can count on our patients reminding us to use it, if we would ever forget. All of our patients say they would never allow us to give a traditional needle and syringe now that they know the STA System exists.

The STA System is also excellent for use in children. It allows us to painlessly numb them, and avoid having any bad dental episode which may stay with them the rest of their lives. Going to the dentist no longer needs to a painful experience because the STA System allows us to comfortably anesthetize all of our patients.

We are so excited to announce that our dental office was recently featured in a national magazine that is mailed to over a 140,000 dentists throughout the country. Patterson Today wrote an article that detailed the building of our brand-new office here in Las Vegas. Our office was one of only 3 offices from around the country featured in their Fall 2009 issue. We were very honored to be selected, and were the very first office ever from Las Vegas to be profiled in the Patterson Today.

The article focused on how we were able to combined the latest in dental technology and equipment in our design, and still emphasis patient comfort and service. We wanted to have an office that allowed our patients to relax and forget that they are even in a dental office. Lasers and Periodontal Disease

Dentistry is a rapidly changing profession where advanced techniques and technology have allowed us to provide the very best care for our patients. However, even with all of this improvement, periodontal disease (gum disease) is still the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults today. Our life expectancy today is nearly 80 years old. Twenty to thirty years ago, it was not uncommon to be an adult and be missing all of your teeth. Today studies have shown that less than 4% of adults are missing all of their teeth.

With our patients living longer and maintaining most of their teeth, this makes it important for dentists to help make their patients aware of the importance of avoiding developing periodontal disease. Statistics show that over 75% of adults have some form of periodontal disease. More importantly over 50% of adults are unaware that they even have it. Periodontal disease normally doesn't cause pain, unless patients have developed an abcess. However, many adults believe that "bleeding gums" is normal. Think about it, you would obviously be concerned if you had a swollen, infected area on a part of your body that bled every time you washed it. This is what happens to many people when they brush or floss their teeth.

One misunderstanding about periodontal disease is that it only develops in patients that are not diligent with their home care. Over 30% of adults are genetically susceptible to developing periodontal disease. An analogy would be the person who works out regularly and is in good shape, but still has heart disease and is at higher risk for a coronary problems.

As part of our comprehensive exam at Drs. Bryson & Margio Dentistry, we do a thorough periodontal evaluation on all of our patients regularly. We believe in order to provide long lasting and successful dental restorations, we must first work together with our patients to achieve periodontal health. You would never want to build a house on an unstable foundation; your gums are the foundation for your fillings and crowns. We are also now aware of the health problems associated with patients who have periodontal disease. They are at a greater risk for:

dangerous bacterial infection
heart disease
stroke
low birth weight for pregnant patients

Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

Cosmetic dentistry is typically not taught in dental schools. That means that to become proficient at performing cosmetic dentistry procedures, a dentist must obtain post-graduate training, both theoretical and hands-on.

Therefore, before you choose a cosmetic dentist, make sure that they are properly trained and qualified. Both Dr. Bryson and Dr. Margio have received training at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the premiere school for cosmetic dentistry training.

If you are in the stage of scheduling consultations with a number of cosmetic dentists who could potentially be your choice, write up a list of questions to take with you. Make brief notes on the answers you receive. If the answers are not clear, ask more questions until you understand. You would want to choose a cosmetic dentist who communicates clearly and who is happy to take time with you.

If you are offered an office tour, think about how you would feel if you were coming to this office regularly. Would you feel welcomed? Safe? Relaxed? Also notice how the dental staff works together. Do they seem well-organized? Busy but not over-stressed? Friendly with each other?

Although patient education is a high priority for the best cosmetic dentists and they will take time for it, you can educate yourself to some extent by reading web pages about the procedures you are interested in. You can also read the biography or credential pages of each cosmetic dentist you are considering.

In all the media flurry about cosmetic dentistry and smile makeovers, the value of good general dentistry gets a little lost. But without a healthy mouth, a beautiful smile is not possible. If you have any gum disease or tooth decay, that must all be corrected before your smile can be made more attractive.

So although general dentistry may not have the glamour of cosmetic dentistry, it is essential, and we offer a full array of basic procedures to establish good dental health for your lifetime. Of course, you need to do your part too, with effective brushing and flossing. But part of our job as general dentists, as well as cosmetic dentists, is to show you how to effectively brush and floss, so that when you come for your regular check-ups, our hygienist does not have much to do.

General Dentistry Procedures

• Dental fillings – we offer white fillings for your smile’s beauty and your long-term dental health. You can choose from white dental composite or porcelain and we will explain the differences.

• Porcelain Crowns – porcelain crowns are as effective as gold crowns and more attractive.

• Gum treatments – we use our laser for removing bacteria and decay from the gums, as well as for improving a “gummy” smile.

• Breath treatment – if you have chronic halitosis, we can diagnose and treat any dental cause and refer you if the cause is medical.

We are so excited that Drs. Bryson & Margio Dentistry is now officially open. We had a wonderful Open House on March 23 and was honored to have Chrissi Scinta to help make it a special evening. In addition to her husband John attending, she also brought along Mama Scinta and her brother Joe. The Scintas have been entertaining Las Vegas for nearly a decade.
