In the early 1980’s, dental implants revolutionized the cosmetic dental industry, and the effects are still being felt today. The breakthrough came when Swedish researchers discovered that by using slow-speed, titanium drills, they could provide better, natural-feeling dental implants.

Dental implants are essentially metal screws that are implanted within the jawbone. The implant then has an abutment (fake tooth) that is bonded to it, correcting one or more missing teeth. Dental implants are chosen to exactly match the size, color, and shape of the rest of your teeth.

Implants are used to replace missing teeth, such as teeth that were knocked out in a sports injury, teeth that have fallen out due to decay, or teeth that you were simply never born with.

Inserting dental implants is surgery. On the plus side, it involves minimal risk and pain. You won’t feel anything during the actual surgery (see sedation dentistry for more) although you will be sore during the recovery period, which lasts a few weeks.

You will have to return to the dentist’s office at least twice, once to insert the implants and again to attach the new teeth. The lasting effects are typically very satisfactory, however. You’ll have new, natural-looking teeth that are permanently and securely attached to your mouth.

The most successful places for implants are the upper and front areas of the mouth, although all missing teeth are potential candidates.
