Common Dental Problems

Serving Las Vegas, Summerlin, and Henderson, Nevada

Although there are some obvious signs that indicate it’s time for a trip to the dentist, the symptoms of some oral health problems are not always evident. That’s why the American Dental Association recommends a thorough dental check-up and professional teeth cleaning at least once every six months.

Las Vegas dentists Dr. Toni Margio and Dr. Randy Bryson provide general dentistry services with an emphasis on preventive dental care. Because your oral health has a direct relationship with your overall systemic health, it’s important to address potential dental issues before they become severe and costly health problems.

Missing Teeth

Sometimes, disease, neglect, or accidents cause teeth to fall out. And, unfortunately, missing teeth aren’t just unattractive; they also put you at a risk for a host of other health problems:

  • Bacteria and disease tend to fester in those areas where teeth once were
  • Teeth surrounding the gap can shift into the wrong position, causing problems with your bite
  • Speech problems and discomfort in jaw joint and muscles can arise

We can replace your missing teeth. Your new teeth can be permanent, as in dental implants, or removable, as in dentures or partials.

Dentist | Las Vegas | General DentistryI’m Afraid of the Dentist

Not everyone loves teeth as much as we do. At one time, going to the dentist was frightening because it was confusing, loud, and even painful. Dentists like Dr. Bryson and Dr. Margio take every measure to ensure your understanding and comfort during your cosmetic dentistry procedure.

Today, there are all sorts of new techniques and equipment at the dentist’s office. Lasers are quiet and painless; tooth whitening is simple and straightforward; and sedation dentistry, eliminates any possibility of pain, anxiety, or fear at the dentist’s office.

Sedation dentistry involves the taking of an oral sedative about an hour before the procedure begins. You aren’t rendered unconscious, but you do become deeply relaxed, and will retain very little memory of what the procedure was like.

I Want a Hollywood Smile

You, too, can have the beautiful “Hollywood” smile, just like that of your favorite celebrity. It’s no secret that most famous stars have undergone cosmetic dental enhancement. Fortunately, the same technology and cosmetic procedures are available to you.

From tooth whitening, to porcelain veneers, to complete smile makeovers, you can have that radiant smile which millions adore. Contact our Las Vegas dentists to schedule an appointment. We’ll help you achieve the celebrity makeover of your dreams!

How Do I Lighten the Shade of My Teeth?

Go to a cosmetic dentist.  We can’t stress this enough. Over-the-counter tooth whitening products are abrasive, cause unnecessary sensitivity, and can do damage to your gums when not supervised properly.  Besides, the over-the-counter teeth whitening products do not have as high of concentration of hydrogen peroxide as the products sold in dental offices,  and are not as effective.  Only a cosmetic dentist has the equipment and the training to whiten your teeth safely.

It’s quick and easy, too. Zoom! 2™ tooth whitening lasers can whiten your teeth up to 8 shades in about 45 minutes. All you have to do is sit back and relax while our dentists do their work. It could even be done on your lunch hour.

My Smile is too Gummy

When your smile shows too much of your gums and not enough of your teeth, you tend to not smile as much. A “gummy smile” is not only embarrassing, it also increases your risk for oral infections and disease.

Dental lasers can be used to re-contour your gum line, giving you a dazzling new smile where your teeth and gums are proportionally visible. The procedure is quick, easy, and painless.

Receding Gums and Bleeding Gums

Healthy gums have a pink tone and conform uniformly around your teeth. Changes in the appearance of your gumline or gums that bleed regularly during brushing and flossing can be an indicator of periodontal disease or other problems.

Early treatment for gum conditions is important. Left untreated, gum disease can damage the support structure for your teeth and contribute to an increased risk for heart disease and other medical problems.

Tooth or Mouth Pain

Tooth pain or discomfort in your mouth is sometimes caused by general sensitivity, especially to extremely cold or hot foods and beverages.

Recurring pain, however, may be a sign of dental problems that require treatment. Pain in a tooth or teeth, or within the mouth itself, can be symptomatic of cavities, abscessed teeth, gum disease and other conditions.

Many people don’t consider migraine headaches as a dental issue, but headaches of migraine-like intensity are the most common symptom of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD).

TMJ/TMD is caused in part by jaw alignment problems or bite conditions that put undue stress on the network of joints, nerves, muscles and bones in the connective region between your jaw and your skull. If not treated, TMJ/TMD can lead to severe jaw pain, worsening dental problems and increasingly painful headaches.

Mouth Sores

Canker sores are common—if uncomfortable—lesions in the mouth that typically disappear within a week or so. Mouth sores that seem unusually large or are recurring warrant the attention of a dentist.

Certain mouth sores can be a sign of severe health problems, including oral infections or cancer.

Dry Mouth and Bad Breath

Everyone experiences dry mouth or bad breath from time to time, but persistent dry mouth or chronic bad breath may be a symptom of gum disease, advanced tooth decay or other ailment.

Again, it’s important to visit your dentist every six months for a detailed exam and teeth cleaning in order to maintain good oral health and treat any problems at their earliest stages. It is especially important to visit your dentist if you experience any of the symptoms outlined here.

Dental Pain

Dental pain may be the result of any number of conditions affecting your gum, teeth and general oral health.

The Summerlin, Nevada, dentists at Drs. Bryson & Margio Dentistry understand the importance of a bright, healthy smile to your self-image as well as your overall health. Many dental problems can also impact your systemic health, which is why we focus our general dentistry practice on the early diagnosis and treatment of oral health issues, and offer restorative services including all facets of dental care.

Dental pain can indicate problems with your teeth, such as the presence of burgeoning cavities or progressive tooth decay that has caused abscessed teeth. Dental pain is also common with the budding of wisdom teeth and impacted wisdom teeth.

The causes of dental pain are not limited to your teeth. Pain in the teeth and around the gum-line can also be symptoms of mouth infections or periodontal disease. Mouth pain may also be an early indicator of oral cancer, especially when accompanied by recurring sores.

Some problems that cause dental pain are not necessarily related to your teeth and gums. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD) can cause severe jaw and mouth pain as well as migraine-like headaches, and it is often the result of a jaw alignment problem.
